As a Meta who has spent countless hours exploring the continent of Nalcott, I've always treasured my Combat Deviations. They were more than just tools; they were vital companions in every firefight and every desperate escape. But when the December 23 (PT) update dropped, everything changed. After months of online testing and offline refinement, the development team introduced a brand-new Combat Deviation Skill System that didn't just add features—it evolved the core combat experience. And I was there to witness it firsthand.

The moment I synchronized with my first Combat Deviation after the update, I gained two active skills: a Battle Skill and an Ultimate. The goal was to deliver richer combat rotations, and boy, did it deliver. Every battle felt fresh, with tactical options that expanded my control over the battlefield. I could feel the difference immediately—no more repetitive summon-and-forget tactics. Now, each Deviation felt like an extension of my own will.
Battle Skills: Unique Traits, Diverse Tactics ⚡
Each Deviation's Battle Skill is tailored to its unique traits. Take Zapamander, for example. Its battle skill lets me enter a lightning-fast sprint state, zipping across the battlefield like a bolt of electricity. I've used it to dodge incoming fire and close distances in the blink of an eye. Then there's By-the-Wind. Its battle skill creates a one-way wind wall that blocks bullets—perfect for setting up a safe firing lane or protecting my squad from a barrage. These skills enter cooldown after use, so timing is everything.

I remember a tense moment in a RaidZone where I used By-the-Wind's wind wall to block a sniper's line of sight, allowing my team to revive a fallen comrade. That single skill turned the tide of the fight. It's these kinds of emergent tactics that make the new system so rewarding.
Ultimates: The Power to Turn the Tide 🔥
Deviation Ultimates are expanded combat skills built upon the current summoning mechanics. Unlike the existing summoner experience, the new ultimates offer rich diversity. Some attach to the character for coordinated attacks, others transform into cover for safe haven, some unleash devastating destruction, while others weaponize the Deviation itself. Each Deviation engages uniquely in battle. Ultimates can be activated when Deviation power reaches its max, consuming energy based on their effects.

Activating Mitsuko's ultimate grants sustained auto-tracking attacks that shred through enemies. I've seen it clear entire groups while I focused on positioning. Mini Wonder morphs into a black hole, pulling all enemies inward—a perfect setup for a grenade or a teammate's ultimate. And then there's Pyro Dino: after summoning it, I can mentally control it to attack as a powerful Pyro Cannon. That level of control is something I never expected from a Deviation.
Here's a quick summary of my favorite Deviations and their new skills:
| Deviation | Battle Skill | Ultimate |
|---|---|---|
| Zapamander | Lightning-fast sprint | (Not specified in my tests) |
| By-the-Wind | One-way wind wall | (Not specified) |
| Mitsuko | (Not specified) | Sustained auto-tracking attacks |
| Mini Wonder | (Not specified) | Black hole that pulls enemies |
| Pyro Dino | (Not specified) | Mind-controlled Pyro Cannon |
Mastering the Controls: Key Bindings and Modes 🎮
The update also introduced new control modes for Ultimates. There's the current in-game wheel mode (tap to deploy/tap to recall, and hold to open the wheel for different actions) and an alternate tap-to-deploy mode (tap again during deployment to enter mind control, and hold to recall). I found the tap-to-deploy mode incredibly intuitive for quick reactions.

One important change: the emoji wheel no longer has a dedicated default key but can be accessed by switching via the universal wheel. It took a bit of adjustment, but now my keyboard layout feels more streamlined.

Flexibility on the Fly: Switching Deviations 🔄
After the December 23 (PT) update, once Deviations are synced in the securement unit, Metas can now equip and switch deployed Deviations directly from the gear backpack interface in addition to the secure pod. This allows for flexible combat strategy adjustments on the fly! Switching would clear Deviation Power and reset battle skill cooldowns, so I had to plan my swaps carefully. But being able to adapt mid-mission is a game-changer.

Scope and Future Innovations 🚀
These changes apply to all scenarios except "Deviation: Survive, Capture, Preserve" (note: some Deviation skills may differ in RaidZone mode; actual in-game effects prevail). I mostly play RaidZone, so I've noticed slight variations, but the core experience remains thrilling.
Innovation goes beyond the surface. In addition to mod and Deviation upgrades, the team is overhauling combat systems: equipment crafting, Cradle control, Stellar Stairway, blueprints, and more. I'm eagerly awaiting future dev blogs to see what else is in store.
Final Thoughts 💭
As a veteran Meta, I can honestly say that the new Combat Deviation Skill System has reinvigorated my love for Once Human. Every battle now feels like a dance of tactics and timing, with my Deviations as true partners rather than mere pets. If you haven't tried it yet, sync up, experiment with different Deviations, and discover your own favorite combos. The battlefield will never be the same.
